Biography

It’s an image Barry Price will never forget and it sums up the career of Des Tuddenham – inspirational captain, fearless footballer and a man who almost bled black and white.

Price marvelled at his teammate’s strength and commitment to winning the ball no matter what obstacle was in front of him. But the thing that still resonates after all these years is the vision of Tuddenham “bursting through packs to kick goals with people hanging off him.”

On occasions, it seemed as if nothing – or no one – could stop the freight train that was Des Tuddenham.

One protagonist, St Kilda’s Kevin ‘Cowboy’ Neale, admired him from the other side of the equation: “Des was not big (180cm), but he was strong and fearless. He fought in any division. He did not squeal if you got in first (with a whack), he just put it away in his memory bank.”

If there had been any criticism of the great Collingwood teams of the 1960s and early 1970s, it was that the group was so packed with brilliance that it lacked some of the bruising qualities and ruthlessness required to win a flag. ‘Tuddy’ was a clear exception. He was almost a throwback to the generations earlier when players were almost prepared to “kill for Collingwood.”

Tuddenham’s powerful frame was likely crafted from his daily chores on the family’s cattle and sheep farm at Ross Creek, near Ballarat, where he was raised. He had excelled at the game from an early age and his form with Ballarat YCW was good enough to earn him an invitation to Collingwood.

He played 11 matches for the Magpies in his debut VFL season of 1962, and won the Copeland Trophy in his second season. For a time, though, he was not altogether comfortable where his football was headed. Tired of commuting between the farm and Victoria Park, he briefly considered giving up on his VFL dream before the start of the 1964 season.

Fortunately for Collingwood, he changed his mind. By the end of that season, he was a member of the club’s 1964 Grand Final team, which lost narrowly to Melbourne.

At 23, Tuddenham was appointed captain in 1966. That first year as skipper was a bittersweet one for him, and the club. He had a strong season, which was highlighted by a superb individual performance in the second semi-final against St Kilda, when he kicked seven goals from a half-forward flank, to put Collingwood into the Grand Final.

A fortnight later, the Magpies endured another heartbreaking Grand Final loss – by a point – and even though he kicked three goals for the game, it was not enough to get his team over the line.

Rose would later describe Tuddenham as “a sensational leader and one of the most inspirational players you would ever see.”

Tuddenham explained that his will to win and inspire his teammates brought out the best in him: “It’s something that comes from within. I’m just built that way … I’ve always liked to do my best, I just hate losing.”

But controversy followed in February 1970 when Tuddenham and teammate Len Thompson withdrew their services from preseason training owing to their dissatisfaction over the club’s player payment structure. The club’s willingness to chase at least one recruit from interstate on a lucrative contract contrasted its steadfastness on Tuddenham and Thompson’s own deals, even though they were among the club leaders.

Some called it a “strike”, even though the pair officially did not miss any matches.

It lasted only three weeks before they reappeared at training, and resumed their careers, comfortable that the club would look at a new match payments structure under a sliding scale.

But the stand would ultimately cost Tuddenham the captaincy, and Thompson a leadership role. Terry Waters was appointed the new skipper for 1970, and even when Rose attempted to re-instate Tuddenham the following year, the Collingwood committee overruled him.

Collingwood lost the 1970 Grand Final in the most heartbreaking of circumstances, having led by 44 points at half-time only to be overrun by a resurgent Carlton. It was Tuddenham’s third premiership playoff loss.

He kicked nine goals and had 40 disposals in the opening round of 1971. That year he finished second in the Copeland Trophy. Incredibly, he was appointed captain of Victoria, even if he was not leading his own club.

Essendon offered Tuddenham a playing coach role in 1972, and he accepted. His Queen’s Birthday return to Victoria Park – albeit in red and black jumper – brought out a crowd of more than 42,000 on a memorable day.

After three seasons at Windy Hill, Tuddenham returned to Collingwood, and the captaincy, in 1976. But the hope that Tuddy’s spirit could once more lift the Magpies to that elusive flag would remain unfulfilled.

He broke his wrist during what was an ultimately disastrous season in which Collingwood would finish last for the first time. He returned to play the first two games of 1977, but a knee injury brought an end to his career. Even though his premiership dream unfulfilled, few Collingwood players have worked as hard as Tuddenham in an effort to chase it.
