The award for Most Consistent Player began in the 1920s and 1930s, then died out until it reappeared in the mid-1960s.

The award was known as the Jock McHale Memorial Trophy from 1966-81, after which it ceased to be presented.

Len Thompson won the award a record five times with Wayne Richardson and Harry Collier winning the award on three occasions respectively.

Collier's consistency played a crucial to The Machine's dominant performance across four seasons.
