“They are just the kind of men to make ideal fighters for the Empire,” the Record wrote. “They have played the game of ‘ball magnificently, and when they get going against the murdering Kaiser’s mob they will make their presence felt.”

Jackson and Seddon returned home after the war, and both once again pulled on the Collingwood jumper. But Rowan never made it back: he died in France late the next year, leaving behind a grieving widow and a young son he never got to see.

Jackson, Seddon and Rowan were just three of the Collingwood footballers who served in the First World War. In all, some 61 Magpies fought the good fight, including those who were in the middle of their careers at the time, those who had already left the club, and those who would not play with the Pies until later.

Of those 61, eight died, and others lost brothers. Players who lied about their age to sign up young, others who were so determined to serve their country they enlisted when they were on the wrong side of 40.

But there are also the stories of life at home – on and off the football field.

One player who lost his little daughter in a house fire, another who lost one brother in a mining collapse and another in a pool accident. Several players who lost their lives in freak accidental deaths back in Australia. Potentially outstanding football careers cut short.

There are also inspirational stories of courage, and of lives rebuilt after the unimaginable horrors of the First World War. Players who enjoyed long careers, or who served the game off the field. Others who succeeded in life outside of football. There are stories of heroics on the battlefields, with a number of the Magpie ANZACs awarded or recommended for distinguished service medals. And a select few who fronted up again for the Second World War.

As the Football Record noted in that 1915 article: “Aye, it is a great honour for any footballer … to be one of the team that is playing the game against our enemies just now.”

This group is all about celebrating the history and heritage of our beloved footy club. It’s a group for those who bleed black-and-white, and who are interested in more than just what goes on each match day.

We’ll bring you advance info on historically-themed club events and activities, hopefully share some quirky info and stats with you, and just generally keep you informed about everything that’s going on in the world of Collingwood history. We might even have some exclusive product offerings along the way.

Don’t worry – you won’t be bombarded with emails talking about the good old days. We’ll just stay in touch from time to time, and do our best to keep our heritage and culture both interesting and relevant to what we do today.

I’m passionate about this club’s heritage – celebrating the journey we’re on, and everything that’s happened along the way. If you share that interest, even to a small degree, then sign up on the link below – because even though footy is big business these days, I still believe that history matters. In fact, it matters now more than ever. And the more of us who get involved, the easier it is to get that message across.

Carna Pies!

They were also concerned at rising costs, and several suspected financial irregularities. So the senior club’s leaders – Frank Wraith, Harry Curtis and Bob Rush – decided it was time to haul them into line. But other long-serving committeemen disagreed, and refused to sign a circular to members denouncing the management of the seconds. A bitter election battle ensued, which the pro-reserves faction lost decisively. The seconds or reserves were now completely under Collingwood control. Collingwood stayed in the VFL/AFL reserves competition until 1992, and then in what was known as the Victorian State Football League from 1993 to 1999. In 2000, the VSFL merged with the modern day VFL (formerly the VFA). Since the merge, the senior grade of the VFL has accommodated senior teams from the VFL, reserves teams from the AFL, and affiliations between VFL and AFL clubs, in which VFL senior players and AFL reserves players compete in the same team. Collingwood fielded a stand-alone reserves team in the VFL in the 2000 VFL season, finishing 11th on the ladder. That team was disbanded in 2001, and the Magpies entered into an affiliation with the VFL’s Williamstown Football Club. Collingwood ended its affiliation with Williamstown after the 2007 season, and re-established a stand-alone reserves team in the VFL in 2008. The Collingwood Football Club launched its own under-19 team to act as the club’s thirds team in 1951. The VFL had started an official ‘Thirds’ competition in 1946, although only seven clubs initially took part. Collingwood was one of those that resisted, partly due to cost and partly to the club’s commitment to its own Schoolboy competition. That competition had started in 1934, providing teams from local schools with the opportunity to strut their stuff on Victoria Park before Collingwood home games. The games were highly popular and also produced some extremely good footballers, including Des Fothergill, Bill Twomey and Len Fitzgerald. The club’s decision to field its own under-19 team in 1951 spelled the beginning of the end for the schoolboy competition, which folded a few years later. The first coach of the Collingwood Thirds was former player and Second World War hero Jack Pimm. Another former player, Eric Cock, acted as team manager. The team’s purpose was to provide recruits for the senior team, and a number of the first intake went on to play senior VFL football with Collingwood, including the winner of the first best and fairest award, Les Smith, Neville Waller, Bill Jones and Laurie Rymer. Collingwood’s new baby Magpies finished sixth in the 12-team thirds competition in their first season, a highly creditable performance. The thirds would go on to win four Premierships for the club before the AFL disbanded the entire competition in 1991, to make way for a new Under-18 competition. Many Magpie stars of that era got their start in the Under-19s, including names like Murray Weideman, Len Thompson, Peter Daicos, Denis Banks, Damian Monkhorst, Gavin Brown, Mick McGuane, Gavin Crosisca, Sav Rocca and many more.
